Seeing the report of Michael Shipton’s visit to the vault brought back memories of
the raid on the vault in September 1966.

After forcing through the padlocked gates the intruders entered the vault , lifted the metal grid on the floor and moved the 7 coffins stacked below the floor. It appears that they were trying to get at the metal-cased coffins. When the police investigated, they found an old knife used to scrape the metal which was found to be copper or brass and not the lead they were looking for.

The wooden lid of one coffin, believed to be that of Frances Mackworth Dolben, who died in March 1892, had been splintered with a hammer.
